Library Foundation Launches Urgent Mission Hills Bookstore Today

BREAKING: The Library Foundation SD has officially opened its second bookstore in Mission Hills, taking over the former Mission Hills Public Library location as of Monday, October 16, 2023. This new independent shop is set to become a vibrant community hub, spotlighting local and LGBTQ+ authors.

Located at the bustling intersection of West Washington and Hawk streets, the Library Shop Mission Hills features a curated selection of new books, gifts for bibliophiles, and a dedicated space for community events. According to Patrick Stewart, CEO of Library Foundation SD, the shop aims to foster a renewed love for libraries and independent bookstores in San Diego and beyond.

“We are thrilled to join the Mission Hills business community,” said Stewart. “This bookstore will not only serve as a local gathering space but will also support all 37 library locations in San Diego through its proceeds.”

The former library site had been vacant since the library relocated approximately a half-mile away, now situated at Washington and Front streets. The new bookstore is a critical step in revitalizing the neighborhood, according to San Diego City Councilman Stephen Whitburn, who represents Mission Hills.

“Transforming the former library into a bookstore is a win for this neighborhood,” Whitburn stated. “I’m grateful to everyone involved who has breathed new life into this community space.”

The bookstore is designed to engage with the local community, featuring a robust collection of new arrivals, staff recommendations, and a special focus on LGBTQ+ literature, reflecting its close ties to the historic “gayborhood” of Hillcrest. Additionally, it includes a section for banned books, reinforcing the foundation’s commitment to combating censorship.

Aside from retail, Library Shop Mission Hills will serve as a venue for author events and speaking tours, enhancing its role as a communal space for cultural enrichment.

The Library Foundation SD, a nonprofit organization, aims to strengthen communities by enhancing the San Diego Public Library system through philanthropy and outreach. Their mission is more vital than ever as they respond to the growing demand for accessible and inclusive literary spaces.

As the momentum builds around independent bookstores, this latest development in Mission Hills marks a significant milestone for both locals and literature lovers.

Stay tuned for more updates on community events and literary happenings at the new bookstore, as it promises to become a cornerstone of the Mission Hills neighborhood and a beacon of support for local authors and artists.
