HBO Max is set to enhance its content lineup with a new series based on the beloved Harry Potter franchise and the renewal of the Spanish original series Furia, according to Sarah Aubrey, head of originals at HBO Max. Speaking at the Content London industry event, Aubrey emphasized that the streaming service, part of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), is committed to expanding its development slate to meet growing audience demands.
Aubrey shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming Harry Potter series, which is anticipated to debut in 2026. “It’s such a delightful adaptation of the books,” she remarked, highlighting that the show is created by a British writer and directed by a British filmmaker. This focus on local talent aligns with HBO Max’s strategy to deliver high-quality content tailored to its audience.
Renewal of Furia and International Expansion
The Spanish hit series Furia, which explores themes of women’s rage, has been renewed for a second season, set to premiere in 2026. Created and directed by Félix Sabroso, the upcoming season will feature a mix of returning cast members and new actresses, as stated by Aubrey. She expressed her personal connection to the show, noting its engaging visuals and humor.
As part of its international strategy, HBO Max will launch in several European markets, including Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein on January 13, 2026. This expansion is expected to enhance the service’s reach, complementing its existing presence in the U.K. and Ireland, which is scheduled for early 2026. Currently, HBO Max content is available in key markets such as Germany and Italy through a partnership with Comcast’s Sky.
The streaming service reported a total of 128 million subscribers for the third quarter of 2025. This growth reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt to market changes and consumer preferences.
Insights on Content Development and Future Projects
Reflecting on her tenure at HBO Max, Aubrey acknowledged the significant changes the company has undergone, including several mergers and shifts in strategy. One critical lesson she shared is the importance of thorough development processes, stating, “If you rush something at the development stage, it often ends in heartbreak.”
In addition to the Harry Potter series, HBO Max is also exploring opportunities for original programming in Australia. Although still in early stages, Aubrey indicated that there are promising developments on the horizon. She also mentioned collaborations with notable creators, including a new series from the team behind Netflix’s acclaimed German original Dark.
As the company prepares for its European launches and the exciting release of the Harry Potter series, it remains focused on delivering content that resonates with audiences worldwide. Aubrey’s visit to the series set underscores her commitment to ensuring that the adaptation meets the high expectations set by its source material.
