Jack Smith Subpoenaed by Congress Over Trump Investigations

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has issued a subpoena to former Special Counsel Jack Smith, demanding his testimony regarding the investigations into former President Donald Trump. The subpoena requires Smith to provide all documents and communications from his time as Special Counsel. He is scheduled to appear for a deposition on December 17, 2025, at 10 a.m.

In a letter dated December 3, Jordan emphasized the Committee’s ongoing oversight of the Office of Special Counsel, specifically highlighting the prosecutions related to Trump and his co-defendants. “Due to your service as Special Counsel, the Committee believes that you possess information that is vital to its oversight of this matter,” Jordan stated.

The move comes amid escalating criticism from Republican lawmakers regarding Smith’s investigation into Trump’s actions surrounding the 2020 election. Critics argue that the inquiry has expanded into an overreach, potentially involving GOP lawmakers, party organizations, and media outlets.

In August 2023, Smith charged Trump with conspiring to overturn the election results following his loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. The allegations included claims that Trump and his associates actively promoted false narratives of election fraud to persuade state officials to reject Biden’s victory. Additionally, they pressured then-Vice President Mike Pence to interfere with the ceremonial counting of electoral votes on January 6, 2021, the day of the Capitol riot.

Smith later decided to drop this case after Trump secured re-election in 2024. In a separate case, he charged Trump in June 2023 with the illegal retention of classified documents, which Trump allegedly took from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago residence after leaving office in January 2021. This included allegations of obstructing governmental efforts to retrieve the documents. Further charges were added in July, accusing Trump of showing classified military plans to guests at his golf club in New Jersey.

The investigation has sparked significant political debate, with Republican leaders intensifying their scrutiny of Smith’s actions.
