UPDATE: Nazareth wrestling delivered a stunning performance against Northampton, clinching a 37-28 victory in their first home dual meet of the season on November 10, 2023. Senior wrestlers Elijah Simak and Brayden Zuercher made significant sacrifices, bumping up two weight classes to secure crucial victories that propelled the Blue Eagles to triumph.
Simak, weighing in at 173 pounds, faced off against Northampton’s Joell Small, who outweighed him by over 40 pounds. In a display of speed and strategy, Simak dominated the match, achieving a 22-6 tech fall victory in just 3:21. “I knew I had the speed on him,” Simak stated. “He started getting tired.” His victory put Nazareth ahead 31-28 heading into the final bout.
Zuercher followed up Simak’s impressive performance by pinning Northampton’s senior Brandon McEntire in just 48 seconds, sealing the victory for Nazareth. Coach Dave Crowell praised his seniors’ willingness to step up, stating, “Anything we can do for the team, we’re all in.” The Blue Eagles improved their record to 2-0 with this win.
The match saw a series of strategic decisions from both teams. Northampton’s coach, Joe Provini, expressed concern over a crucial forfeit at 107 pounds, which forced the Konkrete Kids to adjust their lineup. “Our guys are going to have to ask themselves what kind of season we want to have going forward,” Provini remarked, reflecting on the challenges ahead.
Despite the loss, Northampton showcased resilience through standout performances from freshman Benjamin Schoenberger, who won by fall at 114 pounds, and Brayden Werich, who secured a victory at 127 pounds. However, the overall intensity fell short against Nazareth, as Provini noted, “We did not match their intensity.”
As the Blue Eagles prepare for an upcoming rivalry match against Easton on November 15 at 7 p.m., Simak emphasized the team’s aggressive mindset, stating, “We want to finish on top, finish with all of it on the mat.” With their sights set on continued success, Nazareth wrestling is poised to make waves this season.
As the excitement builds for the next dual, fans and athletes alike will be watching closely to see if Nazareth can maintain this momentum and how Northampton will bounce back from this challenging loss.
