Chaimy Eisman, Ahron’s brother, criticized the government’s lackluster approach to addressing various assaults on Jewish institutions, including incidents of arson and vandalism. “We don’t feel safe here,” he remarked, reflecting a sentiment shared by many in the community.
The attack has shaken the local Jewish population, especially in Bondi, a suburb of Sydney known for its significant Jewish presence. Pearl, a resident who attended a Hanukkah event at the site, expressed her disbelief that such a joyful celebration could be targeted. “We were so targeted in that little space; we were like sitting ducks,” she said, highlighting the vulnerability felt by those in attendance.
Yvonne Haber, a long-time resident of Bondi, lamented the implications of the shooting on the community. Having lived in the area for over three decades, she recalled how Bondi has served as a refuge for Jewish families since the post-World War II era. “To have it targeted in the shooting was devastating,” said the 62-year-old. “We’ve been walking around on tenterhooks, as Jews. This is our worst nightmare.”
