Lakeview Girls Basketball Eyes Success Under New Coach Whalen

The Lakeview girls basketball team is gearing up for an exciting new season, aiming to build on their recent success. After achieving their first winning record in a decade last year, the Wildcats will be led by their new head coach, Aaron Whalen, as they prepare for the challenges of the 2023-2024 season.

Whalen takes the helm after a series of coaching changes, making him the team’s second head coach in two years. Despite the uncertainty that often accompanies such transitions, the Wildcats are approaching the season with determination. The team features a small roster, including only one senior, Katelyn Buchner, but their commitment to teamwork and improvement remains strong. “Our numbers are small, but they work really hard,” Whalen said. “They’re very eager to keep working and just play as a team.”

Buchner, who is looking to step into a leadership role, expressed optimism about the season. “I feel like we’re definitely still getting used to each other a little bit,” she noted. “But once we start fully understanding each other on the court, we’re going to be very good on offense and defense.”

Whalen brings a wealth of coaching experience to Lakeview, having previously led tournament-level teams in Grand Rapids. He stepped into this role after his daughter decided not to play in her senior year, allowing him to focus on coaching the Wildcats. “When the opportunity came up, I thought to throw my hat in for it,” he explained.

The Wildcats finished the last season with a 13-11 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Central State Activities Association (CSAA) White conference, with a 3-5 conference record. This marked a significant turnaround for a program that had struggled for many years. Buchner attributes much of last year’s success to their physical skills, particularly their ball handling, which she hopes to replicate this season.

Returning players include Buchner and junior Madison Bristol, who will look to leverage their experience to guide the newer members of the team. “It’s important to show those who haven’t been on the team before what they can expect,” Buchner said. Whalen emphasized the importance of experience, stating, “It’s going to take them a couple games to get back into the swing of it, but the kids are eager to learn and they want to win.”

As the only senior on the team, Buchner is focused on developing her leadership skills. “I want to try to work on my communication skills,” she said, acknowledging the importance of her role for the team’s dynamics. Whalen praised her natural leadership abilities, noting that the team respects her.

The Wildcats have already played two games this season, and both Whalen and Buchner are excited about the potential for growth. Buchner believes that they have laid the groundwork for a successful season, stating, “Our defense is going to grow tremendously as we continue throughout the season.” Whalen added that he expects the team to compete consistently, saying, “You can expect us to compete every week and progressively see us gel well together.”

With a focus on building a positive team culture, the Wildcats are poised for an engaging season. Whalen remarked on the importance of making the experience enjoyable for the players while also encouraging competition. “I just really want to emphasize that it’s about the kids,” he said. “We want to have fun and compete, too.”

As the Lakeview girls basketball team embarks on this new chapter, they carry with them the hope of continuing their momentum from last season. With a mix of talent and determination, they are ready to face the challenges ahead and strive for success on the court.
