Tremonton is a small community where neighbors look out for one another. As Sterling Johnston described, “It’s an amazing community. Like everybody greets you at the door.” This welcoming atmosphere attracted the Johnstons to the area, where they have raised their three children. However, their peaceful life was disrupted when a phone call from their children informed them of nearby gunfire while they were participating in sports just a couple of blocks from home.
Sterling Johnston quickly drove to the scene, unaware of the tragic events unfolding. “I saw the cop lights, and then I saw the officers on the ground,” he recounted. Tragically, Officer Eric Estrada and Sgt. Lee Sorensen of the Tremonton Police Department had been shot and killed. Additionally, Box Elder County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Allred and his K-9, Azula, were injured in the incident.
In a moment of harrowing uncertainty, the Johnstons acted decisively. Sterling described seeing a man holding a gun in the vicinity. “I saw him come out of nowhere and kneel on the ground,” he said, recounting the man’s terrifying posture. Rather than succumbing to fear, Sterling focused on de-escalating the situation. “I feel like God took over. I remember saying that his kids still love him, and he just kind of slumped down. So, I walked up to him, and he gave me the gun,” he explained.
Courtney Johnston, who had rushed to the scene while calling 911, played a crucial role in this tense moment. “I kind of like just panicked a little bit,” she admitted. After Sterling handed her the weapon, she instinctively threw it into a nearby field. With the immediate danger averted, the couple stayed close to the man, unsure of what to do next as they awaited law enforcement.
Their swift actions not only prevented further violence but also exemplified the spirit of community and bravery that Tremonton is known for.
