Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet Celebrates Holiday Spirit with Jazz

The Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet will present “A Guaraldi Holiday” on December 22, 2023, at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, Colorado. This festive concert, part of a collaboration with Vail Jazz, pays homage to the beloved jazz compositions of Vince Guaraldi, best known for his work on the “Peanuts” television specials.

Performances are scheduled for 18:00 and 20:30, promising to deliver an uplifting experience that combines nostalgia with contemporary jazz flair. The quartet features acclaimed pianist and composer Isaiah J. Thompson, tenor saxophonist Julian Lee, drummer Matthew Lee, and upright bassist Sebastian Rios. This gathering of talented musicians has evolved from childhood friendships into a powerful ensemble dedicated to modern jazz.

Thompson, a Juilliard graduate, returns to Vail after studying at the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2014. According to Anneliese Swift, executive director of Vail Jazz, Thompson’s experience at the workshop significantly shaped his musicianship and creativity. “He embodies exactly what the Vail Jazz Workshop is about: nurturing young artists,” Swift stated, highlighting Thompson’s growth and his role in inspiring the community.

The concert will feature a fresh interpretation of Guaraldi’s iconic pieces, which introduced many to jazz through the heartwarming “Peanuts” specials. Thompson expressed his appreciation for Guaraldi’s ability to engage audiences of all ages. “A lot of people say they don’t like jazz, but they love Charlie Brown — they love Vince Guaraldi,” he remarked. He encourages those who may dismiss jazz to reconsider their views, noting how Guaraldi made the genre accessible to the masses.

The quartet aims to evoke the spirit of Guaraldi’s music while adding their unique improvisational style. “We’re advocates for modern jazz, meaning that if we’re playing modern, that means playing in the now, in real time,” Thompson explained. The musicians focus on listening to each other and creating a dynamic performance that reflects the essence of jazz.

As the concert approaches, Thompson anticipates a celebratory atmosphere. “I hope the audience has a great time and really gets into the spirit of the holidays,” he said. He emphasized the importance of jazz in communities like Vail, where music is cherished and culture is deeply appreciated.

Tickets for “A Guaraldi Holiday” are priced at $84.75 for general admission, with $133 for reserved seating, although both options are sold out. This performance is part of the Pick 3/5 Ticket Package offered by Vail Jazz.
