Remembering Raymond McLees: A Life of Community and Service

Raymond Arledge McLees, III, aged 83, passed away on December 15, 2023, at White Oak of Tryon in Tryon, North Carolina. Known simply as Ray, he leaves behind a legacy of community involvement and a passion for storytelling.

Born in Anderson, South Carolina, Ray was the son of the late Raymond A. McLees, Jr. and Martha Prince McLees. He graduated from Wofford College, where he was a proud member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. His professional journey led him through various roles in the textile industry across South Carolina, Charlottesville, Virginia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eventually, he settled in Tryon, where he took on the role of Investment Advisor at the A.G. Edwards Tryon Office.

Ray was deeply committed to the Tryon community, engaging with numerous local organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of the Tryon Concert Association and was an active member of the Rotary Club of Tryon. His passion for the arts extended to his involvement with the Pacolet Area Conservancy, reflecting his dedication to preserving the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

A devoted member of Central United Methodist Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Ray also enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was renowned for his storytelling ability, captivating audiences with tales from his rich life experiences. Friends and family remember him as a well-loved bon vivant who brought joy and laughter to those around him.

Ray is survived by his two sons, Raymond A. McLees IV (Jennifer) of Lyons, Colorado, and Lander B. McLees of Denver, Colorado. He also leaves behind a daughter, Dr. Margaret McLees (Dr. Patrick Bosque) of Denver, Colorado, as well as two granddaughters.

A funeral service will be held at a later date at Central United Methodist Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The family will receive friends in Tryon, and burial will take place at Old Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
