Krista Gerlich Guides Texas Tech to Historic Top 25 Ranking

Texas Tech University’s women’s basketball team, the Lady Raiders, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a Top 25 ranking for the first time in 13 years. Under the leadership of Krista Gerlich, a former standout player from the 1993 national championship team, the Lady Raiders (14-0) are now recognized among the nation’s elite following a narrow victory against the then-No. 15 Baylor Bears, winning 61-60 on December 17, 2023.

Gerlich expressed her pride and excitement regarding this achievement, emphasizing the long journey the program has undergone. “It’s been such a long process to get to this point, but well worth it,” she remarked. Taking over the program in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic presented many challenges, but the hard work and dedication of the team have finally paid off. The victory against Baylor marked the first time Texas Tech has defeated the Bears since 2011 and was also their first win over a ranked opponent this season.

Celebrating a Major Milestone

The ranking not only reflects the team’s performance but also sets a foundation for future success. “It’s a huge goal of this program,” Gerlich stated. “We have to celebrate things we haven’t done before. This is one of them.” She highlighted the importance of recognizing small victories as the team rebuilds and strives for larger accomplishments. The Lady Raiders’ achievement of breaking into the Top 25 for the first time since 2012 is viewed as a crucial step forward for the program.

The team’s remarkable start to the season marks their best since the 2012-13 campaign. As the players take a break for the holidays, they will return to action on December 31, 2023, against the University of Central Florida. Gerlich reminded her team that the work is far from over. “They can’t be satisfied and rest,” she cautioned. “We got here by keeping our nose to the grind and keeping our head down and working.”

Connecting with a Legacy

Gerlich maintains a strong connection with her former teammates from the 1993 championship squad, who were recently honored in the school’s Hall of Honor. She sees many parallels between that team and her current players. “This team reminds me of us. They are unselfish and driven,” she noted.

As the Lady Raiders prepare for the challenges ahead, they enter a competitive landscape within the Big 12 Conference, where they are one of four unbeaten teams. Teams like TCU, Arizona State, and Iowa State have also started strong, making for a highly competitive season. Gerlich acknowledges the tough road ahead, stating, “It’s a gauntlet. Not only do we have historically good teams like Iowa State, TCU, and Baylor, but there are also new coaching talents that are elevating the league.”

In terms of rankings, the NCAA NET ratings currently place UConn at the top, followed by South Carolina, Texas, UCLA, and LSU. Texas Tech holds the 22nd position in these ratings, which play a significant role in determining NCAA Tournament selections and seedings. The NET has proven to be a reliable predictor of tournament success, as four of the five national champions since its implementation were ranked No. 1 on Selection Sunday.

As the season progresses, the Lady Raiders remain focused on their goals, both for individual games and the larger objective of establishing themselves as a formidable force in college basketball. The excitement surrounding their recent achievements not only uplifts the team but also inspires their fans and the broader Texas Tech community.
