Soquel Goalie Rafael Suarez-Abraham Named SCCAL MVP in Stunning Win

BREAKING: Soquel High’s standout goalie, Rafael Suarez-Abraham, has just been named the 2025 SCCAL MVP, marking a rare honor for a goalkeeper in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League. His exceptional performance helped the Knights clinch the league title and secure a spot in the prestigious CCS Open Division playoffs.

This season, Suarez-Abraham, a towering 6-foot-4 junior, made a staggering 238 saves across 28 games, averaging 8.5 saves per match. His remarkable skills were crucial in leading the Knights to a 23-6 overall record and an undefeated 4-0 league record.

Knights coach Ryan Chapatte, who also earned the title of Coach of the Year, praised Suarez-Abraham’s ability to perform under pressure. “He strikes fear into other coaches and players. You never hear people talk about an athlete like that,” Chapatte noted.

In critical matches against top-tier teams such as Sacred Heart (Prep) and Campolindo, Suarez-Abraham showcased his talent, including stopping crucial penalty shots. “We’re not keeping those games close without him making those impressive saves,” Chapatte added, highlighting the goalie’s instinctive and fearless approach.

Suarez-Abraham’s contributions were pivotal as the Knights advanced to the semifinals of the CCS Open Division, demonstrating their strength against the best programs in the Greater Bay Area. Alongside him, teammate Gabe Suarez-Abraham and senior Stryder Stelck were also recognized, with Stelck leading the team with 81 goals this season.

Both Suarez-Abraham brothers have been playing water polo since childhood, initially honing their skills in a suburb of Chicago before moving to California. Their commitment to the sport has been evident, as they have consistently pushed each other to excel.

In addition to their accolades, several players from the Santa Cruz team were also honored, including senior attacker Hayden Johnson, who led his team with 95 goals. The competitive landscape of the SCCAL has fostered a spirit of excellence among these young athletes.
