Sonia Bustamante Steps Down as Gioia’s Chief of Staff, New Role Ahead

UPDATE: In a significant leadership transition, Sonia Bustamante will step down as the chief of staff for John Gioia, the District 1 supervisor of West Contra Costa County, effective Wednesday. After a decade of impactful service, Bustamante will take on a new role focused on supporting the Bay Area’s immigrant community.

This urgent change marks a pivotal moment for both Bustamante and the community she has tirelessly served. Under her leadership, critical initiatives such as the Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice and programs like Contra Costa Cares, which provides immigrant health care, were established. Her commitment has directly improved the lives of many residents in the area.

Gioia expressed his deep appreciation for Bustamante’s contributions, stating, “Her leadership, vision, and commitment to community have been instrumental in advancing equity, inclusion, and innovation in our district.” He emphasized that her departure is a loss but also a chance to expand her influence in a new capacity.

Taking over as chief of staff will be Robert Rogers, who has been part of Gioia’s team for the past ten years. Gioia praised Rogers for his extensive experience and strong relationships within the community, asserting that he is well-equipped to lead the office with integrity and purpose.

Bustamante’s new position will be as the director of the SAFE Center/Centro SAFE, under the Immigrant Action Network. This center is backed by $5 million in seed funding from Contra Costa County and aims to connect immigrant families with essential services. Bustamante’s transition reflects a broader commitment to support and protect vulnerable communities, especially those at risk of deportation.
