Zelensky Declares Peace Deal Close as Russia Launches Drone Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope for peace in his New Year’s address, despite ongoing hostilities as Russia marked the new year by launching over 200 drones at Ukraine. As the clock approached midnight on December 31, 2024, Zelensky acknowledged the painful reality of the ongoing conflict, stating, “I would give anything in the world if, in this address, I could say that peace will also come in just a few minutes.”

In his speech, Zelensky revealed that a peace deal, backed by the United States, is now “90% ready,” but emphasized that the remaining issues stem from Russia’s uncompromising demands. “Those are the 10% that will determine the fate of peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe, how people will live,” he noted, stressing the significance of these unresolved matters. He underscored that achieving peace requires collective effort and unity from Ukraine, the US, Europe, and the world.

Peace Negotiations Amid Ongoing Conflict

Zelensky’s remarks followed a recent conversation with Donald Trump‘s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, focusing on advancing peace discussions and enhancing security guarantees for Ukraine. Witkoff communicated on social media about the need for practical steps to de-escalate the conflict and prevent future hostilities.

While diplomatic efforts were underway, Russia’s military actions intensified. Ukraine’s military reported that at least two people were killed as a result of the drone strikes, with Ukrainian air defenses managing to intercept 176 of the incoming drones. The attacks struck 15 locations across the country, highlighting the ongoing threat to civilian safety.

In addition to the drone assaults, Russia renewed allegations that Ukraine attempted to assassinate President Vladimir Putin during a December drone strike. Ukraine has categorically denied these claims, and reports indicate that the CIA has also dismissed them as false.

The Path to Peace

Zelensky’s New Year’s speech reflects a deep yearning for peace amidst a challenging reality. He remarked, “Ten percent to save millions of lives. Ten percent of the determination needed for peace to work 100%.” His words resonate not only with the people of Ukraine but also with international observers who are keenly watching the developments in the region.

As both sides navigate the complexities of negotiations, the hope for a resolution remains a critical issue for millions affected by the conflict. The coming weeks will be pivotal in determining whether the path to peace can be secured, as Zelensky and his administration continue to advocate for a resolution that prioritizes the safety and future of Ukraine and its citizens.
