UPDATE: In a remarkable display of courage, over 50 participants dove into the icy waters of Sycamore Pool in Chico, California today for the annual Polar Bear Plunge, despite urgent safety warnings and heavy rain. The event kicked off at 1 p.m. as dedicated swimmers braved the elements for a New Year’s tradition.
Local officials had expressed serious concerns, issuing a warning just 12 minutes prior to the plunge. Chico Police and Fire Department personnel arrived early to secure the area, ensuring safety protocols were in place. Firefighters were on standby, with eight firefighters and four rescue technicians present to monitor conditions.
Participant John Land was the first to plunge into the frigid waters, wanting to test the temperature for others. “I grew up in this pool,” he stated after emerging from the water. “I’ve been in it since I was a baby.”
Despite the warnings, no injuries were reported during the event in either Chico or nearby Oroville, where nine swimmers also took on the challenge at Bedrock Park. Organizer Danny Ballard has been instrumental in continuing this tradition for the past 12 years, honoring the memory of its founder, who passed away in 2023.
Before the plunge, Battalion Chief Mike Watner voiced concerns regarding less experienced swimmers, particularly children and older adults. “If one of them has an issue, then you expose my personnel to undue risk,” he warned. The event drew a mix of seasoned plunge veterans and those eager for an adrenaline rush, like participant Debori Cole, who expressed her excitement for the cold-water dive.
