UPDATE: The University at Albany football program has officially announced a significant coaching overhaul under newly appointed head coach Tom Perkovich. Just confirmed, Mike Wiand has been hired as the offensive coordinator, Matthew Scott as the defensive coordinator, and Keith Larson as the special teams coordinator.
This urgent development signals a bold new direction for UAlbany football, aiming to enhance the team’s competitive edge in the upcoming 2026 season. Perkovich expressed enthusiasm about the new hires, stating, “We are incredibly excited to bring Mike, Matthew, and Keith into the Great Dane family. Their leadership will be instrumental as we enter this next chapter of UAlbany football.”
Leading the charge on offense, Mike Wiand joins the Great Danes after a stellar run at Susquehanna University. Wiand was pivotal in driving the River Hawks to four consecutive conference championships from 2022 to 2025. His innovative offense not only captured multiple titles but also produced standout players, including two-time Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year Josh Ehrlich.
Meanwhile, Matthew Scott brings over 15 years of coaching experience. He recently led PennWest Edinboro to its first seven-win season since 2018 and was awarded PSAC West Coach of the Year. Scott previously coached at UAlbany from 2010 to 2014, helping the team secure two Northeast Conference Championships and a playoff appearance.
Completing the coaching trifecta, Keith Larson returns to the Capital Region with a wealth of experience in special teams. Most recently, he served as a special teams analyst at Texas A&M, contributing to the Aggies’ historic first College Football Playoff appearance in the 2025 season. Larson also has a strong track record at Bucknell University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he led RPI to two Liberty League titles and a run to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals.
This restructuring comes at a critical time as UAlbany looks to rebuild and reestablish itself in the college football landscape. The new coaching staff is expected to enhance the team’s performance and attract top talent, marking a pivotal moment for the program.
Fans and alumni are eager to see how this coaching change will impact the upcoming season. With the season kickoff approaching, all eyes will be on UAlbany as they prepare under their new leadership. Key dates and events leading up to the season will be crucial for fan engagement and team morale.
