A newly designed kitchen in Pennsylvania exemplifies the perfect blend of style and functionality, catering to the needs of passionate home chefs. Created by designer Michelle Gage, the kitchen stands out with its vibrant color palette and clever storage solutions, designed specifically for a family that loves to cook and entertain.
Gage’s design approach focused on creating a vibrant yet functional heart of the home. “The kitchen was the main space the clients originally reached out for,” she explained. “They are excellent home chefs and bakers with a global palette. The kitchen needed to be able to function at a very high level for all its preparation and storage needs.” The result is a space that balances aesthetic appeal with practicality, featuring eye-catching blush pink cabinets and a variety of clever storage options.
Addressing Challenges of an Older Home
Designing a kitchen in a home over one hundred years old presents unique challenges, particularly with non-straight edges and unexpected architectural quirks. “The walls and ceiling are not perfectly square, and there are a lot of funny jogs in the perimeter from things like an old chimney and previous alterations,” Gage noted. Despite these obstacles, the aim was to create a kitchen that was both beautiful and functional.
The kitchen underwent a comprehensive overhaul, retaining the existing sink and cooktop locations while repositioning the refrigerator, ovens, and cabinetry. “We completely overhauled the kitchen lighting and electrical plans to create layers of counter-level, overhead task, and ambient lighting,” Gage added. This thoughtful design ensures that every corner of the kitchen serves a purpose, maximizing usability.
One standout feature is the window nook, transformed into a storage haven with deep lower cabinets and a custom cabinet framing the window. “We wanted to keep the countertop a standard 24 inches here to maintain an effective workstation,” Gage explained. The design also includes a small lamp with a patterned shade for additional lighting and a hidden in-cabinet electrical outlet, enhancing both functionality and charm.
Innovative Storage Solutions Enhance Usability
Gage’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in the kitchen’s cabinetry and appliance layout, which was designed to optimize storage while providing a visually calming space. “We truly used every space for a drawer, shelving, a practical hook, or lighting,” she said. The kitchen includes a full-height spice cabinet and a deep drawer under the double ovens, specifically designed to accommodate baking dishes and pans.
The layout incorporates distinct zones for various kitchen activities, including preparation, washing, and dining. This zoning approach allows for easy access to tools and ingredients, making the kitchen not only functional but welcoming. “That cozy feeling can come with a well-planned kitchen, so everything you need for a task feels comfortably close,” Gage noted.
To complement the functional aspects, the kitchen’s color scheme adds an element of sophistication. The cabinets feature Benjamin Moore Monticello Rose HC-63, a dusky rose hue that harmonizes with the rest of the home’s decor. Gage emphasized that the color was selected for its warm undertones, avoiding overly vibrant shades while still creating a lively atmosphere.
Additionally, the kitchen walls are painted with Benjamin Moore Lacey Pearl 2108-70, a pearly white that enhances the natural light flowing into the space. “The kitchen windows face west and north, so it’s pretty much always receiving diffused natural light throughout the day,” Gage explained. This interplay of color and light contributes to the kitchen’s overall warmth and charm.
The flooring, designed to resemble slate, features a ceramic tile pattern that aligns with a vintage-inspired aesthetic. Gage remarked, “We created a floor pattern sequence riffed off a traditional slate French tile pattern, so it has an old-world feel without being too regular or easily predictable.” This thoughtful design maintains the kitchen’s character while ensuring practicality.
The cozy banquette serves as a central gathering space, perfect for family meals and activities. It highlights the kitchen’s role as not just a cooking area but a hub of daily life.
This Pennsylvania kitchen serves as an inspiring example of how to combine practicality with style, offering numerous ideas for those looking to enhance their own spaces. With an emphasis on clever design, warmth, and charm, it illustrates that a kitchen can be both functional and a pleasure to inhabit.
