Washington County Fair Appoints Veteran Paul Hendrickson as New Manager

A significant leadership change is underway at the Washington County Fair as Paul Hendrickson, a seasoned production manager with over 40 years of experience in the entertainment industry, has been appointed as the new manager. The fair, located in Baytown Township, typically takes place in late July to early August, drawing attention for its community engagement and vibrant atmosphere.

Hendrickson, 71, hails from Norwalk, Iowa, and brings a wealth of knowledge from his previous roles, including positions at TMS in Omaha and Insane Impact in Des Moines. He also served as operations manager at Reliant Park in Houston, Texas. His extensive background in managing state and county fairs in California and Washington further underscores his qualifications for this pivotal role.

“I’m bringing a lot of experience and industry contacts, which obviously will be very helpful,” said Hendrickson, highlighting his enthusiasm for the opportunity. He expressed admiration for the Washington County Fair, likening it to a “mini version of the Minnesota State Fair,” and noted the fair’s efficient layout, which makes it easily navigable for attendees.

“Can it grow? Absolutely,” Hendrickson added, pointing out the ample open land available for potential expansion. His vision includes increasing the fair’s footprint and enhancing its offerings, which aligns with the goals of the Washington County Agricultural Society.

The selection process for the part-time manager position was thorough, with Hendrickson being one of three candidates considered. The search committee, led by board member Margot Rheinberger, unanimously recommended his appointment to the society’s executive board. Rheinberger remarked,

“We hit the jackpot,”

indicating the committee’s confidence in Hendrickson’s ability to lead the fair.

Hendrickson is personally connected to the fair; he is the father of Beth Thurmes and father-in-law of Ben Thurmes, who is a member of the Washington County Agricultural Society’s executive board. To maintain transparency, Ben Thurmes abstained from the decision-making process regarding Hendrickson’s hiring.

The previous manager, Dorie Ostertag, who also served as treasurer, resigned from both positions on October 21 during the annual meeting of the Washington County Agricultural Society. This transition marks a new chapter for the fair as it aims to build on its existing success and explore new opportunities under Hendrickson’s leadership.

With a commitment to enhancing the fair experience and leveraging his extensive network, Paul Hendrickson is poised to make a significant impact on the Washington County Fair, fostering community spirit and growth for years to come.
