Blind Massage Therapist Offers Free Treatments to Single Parents

Steven Stewart, a blind massage therapist, is making a significant impact in his community by offering free massage treatments to single parents. Operating from Unsighted Massage, located within the Nicole Richards Hair Salon in Orland Park, Illinois, Stewart aims to support those who need it most. His initiative reflects not only his personal journey but also a deep desire to give back to others experiencing similar challenges.

Stewart, who lost his vision eight years ago, describes his current state as one of greater happiness compared to his life before blindness. “I’m in a better place now than I was back then — physically, emotionally, mentally — just all of the above,” he stated. After transitioning from a forklift driver in a cold storage warehouse to becoming a licensed massage therapist, he opened Unsighted Massage in September 2025, following his graduation from Moraine Valley Community College’s massage therapy program.

In a heartfelt tribute to his own mother, who raised him and his siblings as a single parent, Stewart decided to provide five free massages to single parents in the area. He selected recipients through a random draw on social media, emphasizing his commitment to supporting those who have given so much to their families. “A lot of my overhead is my time and my hands, and I don’t mind giving that to people,” Stewart remarked.

His initiative gained traction in November, coinciding with reports that up to 2 million Illinoisans lost their SNAP benefits during a federal government shutdown. Moved by the struggles of families facing food insecurity, he felt compelled to help. Tracy Beagarie, a client who learned about his efforts online, offered to contribute by creating charcuterie boards for the parents receiving massages. “You don’t always need the recognition for doing nice things,” Beagarie noted, highlighting her desire to support others anonymously.

Stewart’s generosity extended beyond his initial plan. He ended up assisting at least 10 families after hearing their stories during appointments. “I had one client who broke down in tears just because of how bad she was struggling,” he recalled. While he maintains professional boundaries, Stewart expressed empathy for those in distress, emphasizing the importance of offering support where possible.

Despite his noble intentions, he faced challenges as some individuals misrepresented their situations. Stewart clarified that the giveaway is exclusively for single parents, ensuring that help reaches those who genuinely need it.

The support from his community has been a source of strength for Stewart. Mary Lynn Fleck, owner of Nicole Richards Salon, praised his dedication as a therapist and his commitment to the salon’s values. Fleck, who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, has benefited from Stewart’s lymphatic drainage therapy. “It was the best night’s sleep I got throughout my whole chemo treatment,” she shared, underscoring the therapeutic impact of Stewart’s work.

Stewart’s journey from losing his sight to becoming a community pillar exemplifies resilience and compassion. His commitment to giving back and supporting single parents reflects a profound understanding of the struggles many face. As he continues to build his practice, Stewart remains focused on making a difference in the lives of others, embodying the spirit of generosity that has defined his own experience.

For those interested in benefiting from his services, Stewart encourages single parents to participate in his ongoing giveaway, further solidifying his role as a beacon of hope in Orland Park.
