UPDATE: A man was dramatically rescued this morning after his SUV became perilously stuck on the edge of a cliff in Big Bear, California. At approximately 11:30 a.m. on January 24, emergency crews rushed to the scene along Highway 18 near mile marker 39.5, where the vehicle was found teetering several hundred feet above the ground.
According to Eric Sherwin, spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the incident occurred when the driver accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while pulling out of a turnout. This mistake sent the SUV over a berm, leaving it precariously balanced on the cliff’s edge.
Fortunately, a female passenger was able to exit the vehicle unharmed before emergency responders arrived. The driver, however, remained inside the SUV, hesitant to move as firefighters worked swiftly to stabilize the vehicle.
Fire crews acted quickly, attaching a chain from their engine to the SUV to prevent it from plunging off the cliff. After securing the vehicle, they safely assisted the driver out, who was also reported to be uninjured.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and thankfully, no injuries were reported. This dramatic rescue highlights the risks associated with driving in steep, mountainous areas and the crucial role of quick-thinking emergency responders.
As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, the community is reminded to exercise caution when navigating challenging terrains. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to stay updated on local conditions.
