Urgent Rescue: Officers Save Man from Freezing Marina Waters

UPDATE: A dramatic rescue unfolded on November 15, 2023, as police officers braved frigid temperatures to save a man who fell into the icy waters of Spicer’s Marina in Noank, Connecticut. The emergency call came in at 7:21 p.m., when a friend of the victim reported that he was losing feeling in his limbs.

Responding officers quickly arrived at the scene and found the man struggling in the water, supported by his friend. The friend had discovered the man submerged and managed to secure him to the dock to keep his head above water. According to the Groton Police Department, the man had been in the water for approximately 15 minutes and was beginning to lose movement in his arms and legs.

As the first officer on the scene held the man’s wrist to keep him afloat, additional units were requested. Officers worked swiftly to clear large chunks of ice from the area, facilitating the rescue effort.

“After a coordinated effort, officers and the friend were able to pull him onto the dock before he was transferred to a rescue stretcher provided by responding fire personnel,” police stated. The victim was then transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident began when the friend dropped the man off at the marina earlier that evening, asking him to text once he boarded his boat. When no message came, the friend returned to find him in distress. After a failed initial rescue attempt, he called 911, prompting the emergency response.

This urgent rescue operation involved multiple agencies, including the Noank Fire Department, Groton Long Point Police Department, Groton Long Point Fire Department, Mystic River Ambulance, and Groton Ambulance.
