The Santa Maria Camera Club hosted its annual Awards Reception on January 24, 2024, at the Lake Marie Valley Club, celebrating exceptional photographic achievements among its members. The evening recognized various contributions to the club and featured the awarding of titles that highlight both artistic talent and dedicated service.
At the event, Jim McKinnis was honored as the Photographer of the Year, a title awarded to the member demonstrating exceptional skill and creativity in photography. Additionally, Elaine Calvert received the prestigious Shepard Award for her unwavering commitment and leadership as the club’s vice president. These recognitions reflect the club’s focus on fostering talent and encouraging members to pursue excellence in their craft.
New Leadership and Community Engagement
The evening also included the formal installation of the new Board of Directors for the Santa Maria Camera Club. This leadership transition represents a renewed commitment to enhancing the club’s activities and community outreach efforts. Jeanne Sparks, the current president, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming new members and encouraging local photographers to join the club.
“A love of photography is all that is required,” Sparks stated. “We have members with varying levels of expertise, from those using their phones to capture images to others employing advanced equipment and editing software.”
The club offers a welcoming environment for photographers of all skill levels, including those who exhibit their work in galleries or sell online. Members meet monthly in-person for program meetings, participate in online competitions, and gather for field trips and social events. “Whatever they choose, they will find friendly members who will receive them warmly,” Sparks added. “We treat each other with respect and kindness. We have become like family and are always happy to welcome new members to our group.”
