Remembering Charles Riipi: A Life of Service and Family

Charles Peter Riipi, aged 94, passed away on January 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and love. Born in Waukegan, Illinois, he was the son of Carl (Charlie) and Hilma Riipi. His life was marked by nearly 71 years of marriage to Barbara J. Riipi, whom he cherished deeply until her passing.

Charles was one of six siblings, having been born biologically to Peter and Mae Tentes and later adopted by his aunt and uncle. Throughout his life, he exhibited a strong work ethic, taking on various jobs to provide for his family. His service in the US Air Force during the Korean War was particularly significant, as it was during this time that he discovered his aptitude for engineering and machinery.

A Career Built on Dedication

While stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas, Charles married Barbara, a union that would define his life. After his military service, he worked for Johnson Motors and other companies before retiring as a mechanical engineer from Abbott in 1993. Known affectionately as “Chuck,” he earned a reputation for being able to fix anything, a sentiment often expressed by his wife.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Charles was passionate about hobbies that included fishing, golfing, and bowling. He was deeply involved in his community, serving as a leader in the Zion Moose Club and dedicating three decades to volunteering at City of Hope (formerly known as CTCA), where he helped patients and their families.

A Loving Family Man

Faith played a critical role in Charles’s life as a devoted member of the Zion Church of Christ. He found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he affectionately called “Buddie.” He is survived by his son, Karl (Christine) Riipi, and daughters, Suzanne (Butch) Brummel, Jeanne (Tim) Booth, and Dianna (Joe Roe) Riipi. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, including Janna (Jason) Shrader and Tim (Rihana) Revell, and great-grandchildren such as Katlynn Roldan and Julian Charles Henry Benjamin.

Charles also welcomed foreign exchange students into his home, building relationships with individuals from Norway, The Netherlands, Thailand, and Spain throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and various family members, including his beloved wife and grandson.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Theresa’s Home of Assisted Living for their compassionate care during his final days, particularly acknowledging Lena as an honorary caretaker. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Theresa’s Home of Assisted Living.

Visitation will take place on February 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, located at 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL. Friends and family are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.congdonfuneralhome.com.
