Lyons Township Dance Team Clinches 2nd Place at State Meet

The competitive dance team from Lyons Township High School achieved a significant milestone by securing second place at the Illinois High School Association state meet on January 31, 2024. This event was held at the Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, marking a historic moment for the team, which had not previously brought home a trophy in its eight appearances at the Class 3A competition.

The Lyons team delivered an impressive performance, earning a score of 96.60 from the judges, just shy of the championship score of 96.88 achieved by Lake Park. The atmosphere during the awards ceremony was charged with anticipation as teams awaited the results. Only the top three placements were revealed in a suspenseful fashion, intensifying the emotional rollercoaster for the participants.

“Our thoughts were, it’s anybody’s game now,” said Brittany Smith, the team’s coach. “There is that little bit of doubt and there is also that hope. But we were happy knowing that we put our best foot forward.” This achievement marked a turning point for the team, which has participated in the state competition since 2018 without bringing home a trophy.

What set this year’s team apart was the creative direction taken by seniors Hayden Frazier and Nora Foley. Unlike previous years when outside choreographers were used, this duo led the creative process, allowing the team to utilize their individual talents more effectively. “They were really good about utilizing everyone’s individual skill,” Smith noted. “Having the kids do it – and knowing what everyone can do – that really made a difference.”

The theme for this year’s performance was “Dracula,” which was described as having an avant-garde quality with a darker undertone. Smith explained that this unique approach set the team apart from others, as many competitors opted for more conventional styles.

In addition to Frazier and Foley, the Lions roster included talented dancers such as Kassidy Powell, Reese Morgan, Alexa Farmer, and many others, showcasing a diverse range of skills and creativity.

Following their success at the state meet, the team continued to build on their momentum by competing at the national level. From February 6 to 7, they participated in the Universal Dance Association competition in Orlando, where they placed fifth in the Large Varsity D1 Jazz division with a score of 88.4125. Smith highlighted that while they had qualified for nationals in the past, this was the first year they felt ready to compete.

“We have been to summer camps that the UDA sponsored, but we never took the jump to actually compete,” Smith said. “But this is the year we felt like we could do it.”

As the season progresses, the Lyons Township dance team continues to demonstrate resilience and creativity, promising an exciting future in competitive dance.
