Frank Irvine, the lead custodian at Meadowview Elementary School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, has been honored with the prestigious Golden Apple Award for his exceptional contributions to the school community. Over the past three years, Irvine has implemented a unique program that encourages students to take responsibility for their environment through a friendly competition known as the “Golden Tray.”
Celebrating Responsibility and Team Spirit
The Golden Tray competition motivates students to maintain cleanliness in the cafeteria. According to Travis Logslett, the principal of Meadowview Elementary, Irvine’s efforts have transformed the lunchroom experience into an adventure. “He does so much for our building,” Logslett stated, highlighting the positive impact of Irvine’s initiatives. “One of his big things is here in the cafeteria.”
Students earn the Golden Tray each week based on their behavior and performance in the lunchroom. “The grade that does the best earns the Golden Tray,” explained Irvine. “They have options of sitting with their friends or they get an extra Mr. Frank recess.” The excitement culminates on Friday afternoons when Irvine announces the winning class over the public address system, often resulting in enthusiastic cheers echoing throughout the school.
The sense of community fostered by Irvine’s program extends beyond competition. Logslett noted the strong connections Irvine builds with the students, stating, “We have kids during the day who just come and help him.” This collaborative spirit creates an environment where students feel responsible for their surroundings.
Recognition and Support
In recognition of his outstanding work, Irvine received the Golden Apple Award, alongside a financial contribution of $500 for both himself and Meadowview Elementary School. This award was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Student Transit and the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation.
In his acceptance speech, Irvine expressed gratitude for the support he receives from the school community. “Love the building, love the staff and kids,” he said. “It’s like having another 400 kids.” His dedication to fostering a caring and responsible environment has not only made a lasting impact on the students but has also earned him this well-deserved recognition.
Congratulations to Frank Irvine on this remarkable achievement, which highlights the essential role custodians play in schools and the positive influence they have on students’ lives.
