Lukas Iannone Shatters Records at Les Richards Championships

BREAKING: In a stunning display of athleticism, Lukas Iannone set two new records during the Les Richards Swimming Championships, held in Scranton on October 14, 2023. Despite feeling under the weather, the Scranton Prep senior dominated the competition, winning gold in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke, shattering meet and pool records in the process.

Iannone’s performance was nothing short of remarkable. He clinched his fourth consecutive gold in the 200 IM, finishing with a time of 1:57.42, breaking the previous record of 1:57.99 set in 2016. “All four years at the Les Richards, I went undefeated in the 200 IM, and this meet is huge,” Iannone stated. “To do those times is a really good look for districts.”

In the 100 backstroke, Iannone further showcased his prowess, finishing in 52.60 seconds, eclipsing the prior record of 53.12 established by Peter Kawash in 2020. Iannone expressed gratitude for surpassing a record of someone he admired, saying, “It’s special to get that record.”

But Iannone wasn’t alone in making headlines. Tunkhannock’s Jaden Baltrusaitis also made waves, winning the 100 freestyle in 46.86 seconds, breaking a long-standing record of 47.06 from 2009. Baltrusaitis claimed victory in the 50 sprint as well, finishing in 21.51 in a tight photo finish. “This was the big breakout that people have maybe once in their lives. It is such a cool moment,” he remarked.

In a thrilling conclusion to the meet, Roy Ayala secured gold in the 100 breaststroke, breaking the record of 59.02 set in 2009. “It is an amazing one-of-a-kind feeling,” Ayala said, reflecting on his achievement.

Meanwhile, Jason Casper from Abington Heights concluded his high school career with a flourish, winning gold in both the 200 free with a time of 1:45.19 and the 100 fly in 51.81, completing his impressive tally of seven gold medals over the years. “I feel great,” Casper stated, highlighting his success in these events.

As the meet progressed, Connor Runquist of Lake-Lehman triumphed in the 500 free with a time of 5:01.21, narrowly defeating Holy Cross‘s Leo Cholish, who finished at 5:04.36.

The energy in the pool was palpable as athletes pushed their limits, setting a new standard for future competitions. The Les Richards Championships continues to be a pivotal event, showcasing the incredible talent and determination of young swimmers in the region.

With the championships concluded, all eyes now turn to the upcoming district competitions. The outstanding performances and record-breaking times set the stage for an exciting season ahead.
