West Rowan Falcons Capture Conference Title with 22nd Win

West Rowan High School’s girls basketball team achieved a significant milestone on March 16, 2024, defeating Carson High School by a decisive score of 61-27. This victory marked the Falcons’ 22nd win of the season and solidified their position as co-champions of the South Piedmont Conference (SPC).

The Falcons’ journey has been remarkable, particularly given their previous season’s record of 2-21, where they finished at the bottom of the SPC with an 0-16 mark in a nine-team league. This season, West Rowan has turned the tide, ending with an impressive 22-1 record and a 13-1 conference performance. They have dominated their home games, with their only loss coming during a closely contested match against Northwest Cabarrus.

Sharing the top spot in the SPC with a strong 20-game winning streak, the Falcons and the Trojans are poised for high seeds in the upcoming 5A state playoffs. The resurgence of key players such as Tiara Thompson and the return of Aubrey Martin have played crucial roles in the team’s transformation. The players who faced last season’s challenges are also contributing significantly this year. Many of them are sophomores, providing a solid supporting cast to the senior leaders.

In the game against Carson, Julia Burleson, who had been instrumental in her team’s previous win against South Rowan, started strong with two three-pointers in the first quarter. However, the Falcons quickly adjusted their defense, limiting Carson’s scoring opportunities. The Cougars, missing key players Rylee Hedrick and Brooklyn Johnson, struggled to find offensive momentum, with freshman Cambie Perry leading the team with nine points.

“I think we played hard,” said Carson head coach Chloe Monroe. “We were just overmatched.”

Thompson excelled for the Falcons, scoring 22 points, marking her 11th consecutive game with over 20 points. Martin contributed significantly as well, adding 14 points, including two three-pointers, while Luci Pharr and Sydney Smith contributed eight and seven points, respectively.

Looking ahead, West Rowan is set to enter the conference tournament as the second seed and will host East Rowan, the seventh seed, on March 18, 2024. Meanwhile, Carson’s team, now with a record of 10-11 and a conference record of 7-7, is seeded fifth and will face the fourth seed, South Rowan.

The Falcons’ turnaround season has become a source of pride for the community, demonstrating resilience and teamwork as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the playoffs.
