High school sports enthusiasts in Delaware have the opportunity to influence the recognition of outstanding athletic performances from Week 11 of the winter sports season. The Delaware Online High School Sports Athlete of the Week voting, presented by Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists, is now open, allowing fans to select their favorite athletes. The winner will be announced on February 20, 2024, and voting is free and accessible to all.
Meet the Nominees
This week’s nominees showcase remarkable talents across various sports disciplines. Each athlete has demonstrated exceptional skills and determination in their respective events.
Devon Craig from Dover has made his mark in indoor track and field, achieving a fifth-place finish in both the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.27 seconds and the 200-meter dash at 25.46 seconds during the Garden State Invitational.
Aaron Markey from Charter of Wilmington has excelled in swimming and diving. He clinched victory in four events at the Diamond State Conference Championships, contributing to his team’s success with wins in the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and 200 freestyle relay.
Hope Smith of Hodgson girls basketball delivered a standout performance, scoring an impressive 28 points in a decisive 53-28 win against Appoquinimink, showcasing her scoring prowess and leadership on the court.
Riley Stazzone from Cape Henlopen also made headlines with his victory in the 3,200-meter race at the Garden State Invitational, finishing with a time of 9:35.64, solidifying his status as a top competitor in his field.
Lastly, Aidan Walsh from Saint Mark’s swimming and diving had a remarkable week, winning a total of six events in matches against Brandywine and Conrad. He also shattered a long-standing school record in the 100 breaststroke, which had stood for 28 years.
