Hay relied on creative use of patterns to infuse personality into the space, particularly in the snug area, which features a striking and immersive design. The central fabric choice, MONFAUCON by Christopher Moore, showcases a graphic, fan-shaped motif adorned with traditional florals against a deep green backdrop. By extending this fabric across walls, upholstery, and furnishings, Hay eliminated visual breaks, allowing the snug to feel cohesive and enveloping.
Creating a Calming Atmosphere Through Design
Hay’s design philosophy centers on creating a private sanctuary. She explains, “The aim was to create a private sanctuary for our client – somewhere they could truly switch off.” The use of a single fabric across the room creates an immersive environment that feels fresh rather than chaotic.
Hay offers insight into choosing the right fabric for a cohesive look. “Organic patterns such as floral stripes or flowing motifs work beautifully because they feel immersive rather than rigid,” she advises. In contrast, large-scale geometric designs can disrupt the tranquility of a space.
Scale and tone play critical roles in achieving balance. Hay notes that all secondary elements, including ikat prints and solid fabrics, were selected to complement the central fabric. “The entire living room color scheme was derived from the main fabric. We wanted the room to feel rich yet still bright and fresh,” she emphasizes. By maintaining a controlled color palette and varying the scale of patterns, the overall effect is harmonious and inviting.
Texture is equally important. Hay carefully introduced contrasting textures to soften the impact of the primary fabric. For instance, the tonal rug adds visual relief while anchoring the scheme. The furniture layout is designed for both comfort and functionality. Hay opted for an L-shaped sofa tucked into the corner, maximizing the space while creating a cozy seating area. “In a snug or TV room, they work beautifully,” she states. This arrangement allows for easy movement and emphasizes the room’s connection to the garden.
Lighting plays a vital role in establishing the room’s atmosphere. Instead of relying on overhead lighting, which could disrupt the cozy environment, Hay chose floor lamps and wall sconces with patterned shades to create a warm glow. “We wanted the lighting to feel intimate and atmospheric,” she explains.
An interesting feature of the design is the built-in media wall, painted in a confident blue. Hay describes it as a visual “palate cleanser,” using contrast to balance the richness of the space. This choice prevents the snug from feeling claustrophobic while remaining consistent with the overall color scheme.
To personalize the room, Hay incorporated the clients’ collection of Asian antiques, making the space feel authentic rather than staged. “Incorporating their pieces was important to ensure the room felt personal,” she notes.
