Dennis Schirmer, Esteemed Contractor and Family Man, Passes at 77

Dennis Schirmer, a beloved family man and respected general contractor, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, after a long battle with cancer. He was 77 years old. Surrounded by his wife, Robin Somers, Dennis’s departure marks the end of a life dedicated to family, community, and his craft.

Born in 1948 in Woodside, California, Dennis was the youngest of five siblings. He grew up under the guidance of his father, Art Schirmer, a general contractor, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and a passion for construction. By the time he reached high school, Dennis possessed the skills to build a house. His early exposure to the family business laid the foundation for a lifetime career in construction.

In 1963, Dennis met Robin in their sophomore English class. He often jokingly remarked that she “claimed him.” After a brief stint in college, they eloped to Carmel, California, marrying at the Monterey courthouse. Their journey together saw them move to Santa Cruz in 1968, where Dennis built their first home, an A-frame in Pleasure Point.

Family Legacy and Community Impact

Dennis was more than just a contractor; he was a devoted father and grandfather. He spent countless hours driving his son, Joe Schirmer, to surf contests along the coast and later assisted Joe in establishing his organic farming business, Dirty Girl Produce. When daughter Jennifer Dunn graduated with a law degree, it was Dennis who celebrated her achievement with a memorable party.

His commitment to family extended beyond his immediate household. He cared for his mother, Mary Schirmer, and mother-in-law, Jean Somers, until their passing. Dennis also remodeled his sister-in-law’s home after her husband died, demonstrating his unwavering support for family in times of need.

Throughout his life, Dennis maintained a strong connection to the community. He worked as a property manager at Pajaro Dunes, where he formed friendships with residents. Known for his strong moral compass, he described himself as an existentialist who accepted life’s absurdities while championing social justice.

Passions and Lasting Memories

Dennis’s adventurous spirit shone through his love for the outdoors and road trips, which he enjoyed until his cancer diagnosis in 2020. He cherished simple pleasures, whether it was pounding nails alongside his crew or spending quality time with his grandchildren—Alex, Colin, Charlie, Calvin, and Pearl. They were the light of his life, and he took great pride in creating a loving environment for them.

In the 1990s, Dennis and Robin experienced a brief separation but reunited, marrying again after Robin endured a serious horseback riding accident. Their enduring bond showcased a partnership that weathered life’s challenges. Together, they witnessed their children marry and welcomed the joys of family life.

Dennis’s legacy will be honored during a Celebration of Life on March 7, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Center for Farmworker Families in Santa Cruz or the nonprofit TEACH (Training, Education, and Community Health).

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sister, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dennis Schirmer’s impact on his family and community will be cherished, as he made life better for those fortunate enough to know him. His memory will continue to inspire and uplift, reminding all of the profound influence one dedicated individual can have on the lives of many.
