Control Resonant, the latest entry in the acclaimed series, has introduced a gripping narrative set in a Manhattan under supernatural quarantine. Developed by Remedy Entertainment, the game was unveiled during The Game Awards 2025 and follows the story of Dylan Faden, who is released from confinement by the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC) to confront dual threats to reality.
The FBC faces an unprecedented challenge as a mysterious entity, dubbed The Pattern, envelops Manhattan, completely cutting off the island from the outside world. This force poses a significant danger, but the situation worsens with the resurgence of The Hiss, the primary antagonistic force from the original Control. The FBC’s immediate focus has shifted to quarantining survivors while they seek to understand and combat these simultaneous threats.
In a bid to harness Dylan’s unique supernatural abilities, the FBC enlists his help, albeit with caution. His handler, Zoe De Vera, serves not only as a guide but also as an emotional support throughout his journey. Players will frequently interact with her for updates on the evolving situation and to navigate the challenges ahead. Furthermore, Dylan’s motivation is amplified by the search for his sister, Jesse Faden, who has mysteriously disappeared within the confines of The Pattern.
Exploring an Altered Manhattan
As players traverse Manhattan, they will encounter a world where the laws of physics are in flux. The environment is subject to unpredictable changes, such as shifting architecture and unstable gravity. To navigate these challenges, Dylan can employ newly acquired powers like Reach and Shift. These abilities will allow players to overcome complex obstacles and access previously unreachable areas.
Dylan operates from the FBC Field Office, strategically located in the heart of Manhattan. This hub will expand as players progress, providing additional resources and FBC agents. Players can customize Dylan’s appearance and choose which areas of the city to explore. The FBC has managed to implement temporary firebreaks to segment Manhattan into distinct zones, each offering unique biomes for players to investigate.
Remedy has revamped the map layout from previous titles, enhancing clarity regarding points of interest and player location. Unlike its predecessor, Control Resonant shifts from a third-person shooter format to an action-RPG style, introducing dynamic gameplay elements. Players will experience fast-paced movement, aerial maneuvers, and melee combat without traditional firearms. Instead, Dylan relies on physical attacks, such as bludgeoning uppercuts and shield bashes, which also replenish his ability resources.
A New Approach to Gameplay and Narrative
The game’s upgrade system reflects the aesthetics of the Control series while offering a fresh approach to character development. Players can enter a dream state known as The Gap to unlock various upgrades, including combat abilities and weapon enhancements. Defeating massive boss creatures called Resonants will yield unique skills that can significantly influence gameplay strategies.
As players gather resources, they can enhance Dylan’s melee weapon, the Aberrant, with combo extenders and attack buffs. The character building is further expanded through a traditional skill tree, allowing for diverse play styles, although not every talent can be unlocked in a single playthrough.
Control Resonant also promises a rich narrative experience with numerous side stories that delve deeper into the lore of the FBC. While the game maintains a zone-based structure rather than an open-world format, players will need to explore diligently to uncover secrets and side missions.
The departure from the original combat system represents a significant shift for Remedy, raising questions about the game’s reception. Players will soon have the opportunity to judge the changes themselves when Control Resonant launches on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S later this year. This preview is based on a private briefing with Remedy Entertainment, and the final product is subject to modifications.
