Covington, TN — Two men are now behind bars after a high-stakes police chase unfolded through Downtown Covington today, ending in an unexpected standoff inside a local barbershop.
The incident began when a police officer attempted to pull over a vehicle near Highway 51 and Church Street for having a broken brake light. The vehicle stopped briefly, but chaos erupted when the passenger, identified as 24-year-old Damian Lattimore, suddenly exited the car armed with a rifle and took off on foot down West Pleasant Street.
Authorities followed the fleeing suspect who made a bold move by entering 1776 Barbershop Parlor. In an unusual attempt to evade capture, Lattimore reportedly sat down in a barber chair, pretending to be just another customer waiting for a haircut. Police quickly surrounded the shop and arrested him, ending the tense moment.
Lattimore faces multiple charges including evading arrest, tampering with evidence, and reckless endangerment. A distinctive pink rifle linked to him was recovered nearby in the grass near the water treatment facility.
Meanwhile, the driver, identified as 21-year-old Vertavious Barbee, fled the scene in the vehicle. Law enforcement officers in nearby Ripley tracked and apprehended Barbee on Skyline Drive. He is charged with evading arrest and violation of light laws, with his bond set at $15,000.
