South Los Angeles Intersection Renamed to Honor Activist Danny Bakewell Sr.

A significant transformation took place in South Los Angeles as an intersection was renamed to honor community activist Danny Bakewell Sr.. The newly designated Danny Bakewell Sr. Square was unveiled at the intersection of Obama Boulevard and Crenshaw Boulevard, just one day before the annual event he founded, The Taste of Soul. The ceremony, held on Friday morning, was led by Los Angeles Councilwoman Heather Hutt, who emphasized the impact both Bakewell and former President Barack Obama have had on advancing opportunities for Black Americans.
The intersection serves as a tribute to two influential figures who dedicated their lives to improving the lives of many in the community. “This intersection now honors two people, President Barack Obama and Danny Bakewell Sr., who dedicated their lives to forging a better path for Black Americans,” Hutt stated during the ceremony.
Bakewell’s legacy spans decades, with his leadership of The Brotherhood Crusade for over 30 years, an organization devoted to promoting civil rights for the Black community in Los Angeles. He also co-founded the Black United Fund and took ownership of the Los Angeles Sentinel in 2004, the oldest and largest Black-owned newspaper on the West Coast.
In addition to his work in activism, Bakewell played a vital role in local governance, advising notable mayors such as Tom Bradley, James Hahn, and Antonio Villaraigosa. His contributions have left a lasting mark on the political landscape of Los Angeles.
The Taste of Soul is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary on Saturday, October 18. Recognized as California’s largest free one-day street and food festival, it will take place on Crenshaw Boulevard between Obama Boulevard and Stocker Street. The event showcases the rich culture and culinary diversity of the community, drawing thousands of attendees each year.
The renaming of the intersection not only honors Bakewell’s extensive efforts but also reinforces the importance of community and collective progress. As Los Angeles continues to evolve, the legacy of leaders like Bakewell serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and empowerment within the Black community.
