UPDATE: The Leominster community celebrated a significant milestone on October 16, 2023, as the new shelter named after longtime Spanish American Center Executive Director Neddy Latimer officially opened its doors. The Neddy Latimer House is set to provide vital support for individuals and families in need, marking a new chapter of hope in the region.

The atmosphere was electric during the naming ceremony, where Opportunities for Hope Director of Operations Ada Alvarado unveiled the shelter’s sign, honoring Latimer’s decades of unwavering dedication to the community. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, emphasized the shelter’s importance, calling it “a beacon of hope.”

“This is not just a building,” Bushman declared, noting that the shelter represents a commitment to serving the most vulnerable. “Neddy’s passion for people has inspired us all.” He highlighted the collaboration of various organizations, including the Spanish American Center and United Way, which invested over $3 million to bring this project to fruition.

Latimer, visibly moved by the honor, expressed her gratitude to the community, saying, “This place will become a beacon of hope.” She emphasized her commitment to helping others regain their dignity and hope for a better future.

The ceremony featured heartfelt speeches from community leaders, including Mayor Dean Mazzarella, who praised Latimer for her extensive contributions over nearly four decades. “She dedicated her whole life to give back,” Mazzarella stated, urging attendees to honor her legacy by continuing to support the community.

Bushman acknowledged the shelter’s challenges in meeting building codes but reiterated the collaborative spirit that helped overcome these hurdles. “It involves everyone here,” he said, highlighting the shelter’s role as a community project.

The shelter not only aims to provide emergency housing but also focuses on education and job placement for its residents, thanks to partnerships with organizations like Heading Home, a leading provider of housing solutions in the commonwealth. This collaborative effort ensures a holistic approach to support.

The event concluded with a toast to Latimer and Alvarado, marking a joyous occasion for all who attended. As attendees enjoyed food and cake, the message was clear: the Neddy Latimer House stands as a testament to compassion and community support, destined to change lives.

As the Neddy Latimer House prepares to welcome its first residents, the community looks forward to witnessing the impact of this new initiative. “May this house be a place of peace, a place where hope is rekindled,” said Father Julio Granados, encapsulating the spirit of the day.
