CSU Rams Transition Leadership After Firing Coach Jay Norvell

Colorado State University (CSU) has announced a significant leadership change in its football program following the dismissal of head coach Jay Norvell on October 29, 2023. This decision came after the Rams suffered a 31-19 defeat against Hawaii, resulting in a disappointing 2-5 record for the season and a 1-2 standing in the Mountain West Conference.
During a press conference, CSU’s director of athletics John Weber emphasized the need for progress within the program. “Ultimately, progress was challenged and progress stalled at a very critical time for us as we ascend into the Pac-12,” Weber stated, highlighting the urgency for a new direction. Under Norvell, who held the head coaching position for three and a half years, the Rams recorded an overall record of 18-26.
In light of these developments, defensive coordinator Tyson Summers has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Summers, who joined the CSU staff in December 2022, replaces Norvell as the team prepares for the upcoming Border War game against Wyoming on November 4, 2023. Following that matchup, the Rams will have a bye week before hosting UNLV on November 8.
Weber noted that the team struggled to establish its identity this season, particularly during the recent game against Hawaii. “It was an opportunity for us to get coach Summers focused on what the future of Colorado State is headed into the rivalry game,” he said. The additional week provided by the bye will also allow the coaching staff to concentrate on recruiting efforts.
Summers has previous experience as a defensive coordinator at CSU under former head coach Mike Bobo and led Georgia Southern as a head coach for two seasons. He expressed enthusiasm about stepping into the interim role, stating, “It’s incredible… I’m thrilled for the opportunity to lead and for the opportunity to serve and help these young men as best I can.”
As he takes on his new responsibilities, Summers will continue to call defensive plays while delegating offensive play calling to tight ends coach Grant Chestnut. He remains optimistic about the potential for the remainder of the season, declaring, “We’ve got an opportunity to really do something special.”
While Summers fills the interim role, Weber confirmed that a national search for a permanent head coach will commence immediately. CSU plans to collaborate with a premier search firm to ensure the right candidate is selected to lead the program moving forward, aiming to revitalize the Rams’ football aspirations.
