CSU Rams Fire Coach Jay Norvell After Disappointing Season

UPDATE: Colorado State University (CSU) has just announced the firing of head football coach Jay Norvell following the team’s disappointing 31-19 loss to Hawaii on October 28, 2023. With a season record now at 2-5 and just one conference win, CSU’s athletic director John Weber emphasized the urgent need for change during a press conference Monday.
“Today is about moving forward,” said Weber, highlighting the critical juncture for the Rams as they prepare to transition into the Pac-12. Norvell’s tenure, marked by a 18-26 record over three and a half years, reached a turning point after Saturday’s defeat, which Weber cited as the final straw.
As the Rams gear up for their upcoming rivalry game against Wyoming on November 4, interim head coach Tyson Summers steps in, having previously served as the team’s defensive coordinator. Weber expressed confidence in Summers, stating, “Coach Summers has every authority to do what he feels necessary for us to finish the season strong.”
Summers, who took over coaching duties immediately, plans to maintain his role as defensive play caller while delegating offensive responsibilities to tight ends coach Grant Chestnut. “It’s incredible,” Summers remarked about his new role. “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to lead and help these young men as best I can.”
CSU has five games left this season, and Summers believes there’s still a chance for the team to achieve something special. “We’ve got an opportunity to really do something special,” he stated, urging the players to focus on the present and embrace the challenge ahead.
Weber confirmed that a national search for a new head coach will begin immediately, partnering with a leading search firm to find the right candidate to lead CSU into the future. This leadership change comes at a pivotal moment, as the Rams look to regain momentum and identity in their season.
With recruiting and program development in focus, CSU’s community awaits the next steps in this evolving story. Stay tuned for further updates as the Rams embark on a new chapter under Summers’ interim leadership.
