UPDATE: The University City High School (UCHS) boys beach volleyball team is making headlines with their impressive performance and infectious enthusiasm, captivating fans this October. Led by standout players like Keigo Pilette and Malcolm Solt, the team is not just about competition; it’s about the pure joy of the game.

The Centurions recently achieved a stunning victory, crushing their opponents 21-0 and 21-2 in a match that had spectators buzzing. This success marks a remarkable week where UCHS swept both matches, securing a 5-0 win against two different schools. Coach Mark Salata praised the teamwork and dedication that has fueled their rise in the sport.

“This is super fun, then you can go in the water,” said senior Jacob Brantuas, emphasizing the unique experience of playing beach volleyball. His partner, fellow senior Jonan Merle, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the outdoor thrill of competing under the sun.

The sport, which is still not sanctioned as a CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) event, faces challenges in gaining official recognition. However, the team is undeterred, using past losses, such as their playoff defeat to St. Augustine, as motivation to improve. “We all know we should have won,” said junior Jake Goforth, reflecting on the team’s resilience and drive to perfect their skills.

Goforth and his teammate Anthony Bazalaki have committed to intensive practice sessions, sometimes lasting up to eight hours, as they strive to enhance their performance. “Coach Mark invests a lot in the program,” Goforth noted, showcasing the supportive environment at UCHS.

The beach volleyball courts, conveniently located behind the gym on campus, provide an ideal venue for student-athletes and their supporters. The community is rallying behind the Centurions as they continue their season, showcasing both athleticism and teamwork.

As the UCHS beach volleyball team pushes toward further success, fans are encouraged to follow their journey and support the growth of this exhilarating sport. The camaraderie and competitive spirit at UCHS are not just about winning; they’re about building lasting memories and friendships on the sand.
