Hugh Freeze Addresses Jackson Arnold’s Challenges Ahead of Arkansas Matchup

Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze is rallying support for his quarterback, Jackson Arnold, as the team prepares for a crucial game against Arkansas following a disappointing 0-4 start in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play. Freeze emphasized that the struggles on third downs are more a result of protection issues rather than limitations in Arnold’s abilities.
Third-Down Challenges Highlighted
Arnold has thrown for 1,190 yards this season, with one interception and twelve total touchdowns. Despite these numbers, his performance on critical third downs has raised concerns about his leadership as the Tigers contend with their winless SEC record. “I think we’re calling things he feels really good about,” Freeze stated during a press conference. He noted that on third-and-long situations, “nobody feels real comfortable,” particularly against formidable defenses like that of Missouri.
During the recent game against Missouri on October 18, 2025, Arnold faced significant challenges, including being sacked five times. Although he completed 60% of his passes, he managed to convert only one third down from nine yards or more. Auburn’s offense struggled significantly in the final moments of regulation and overtime, recording just 35 yards across those crucial minutes and finishing with negative yardage in overtime.
Focus on Offensive Strategy
Freeze pointed out that the team does not lack plays designed to capitalize on Arnold’s strengths. Instead, he suggested that the focus should be on ensuring the offensive line can provide adequate protection to allow for successful execution. “It’s not so much, ‘Can he do them?’” Freeze remarked about the play-calling. “It’s, ‘Can everybody hold up in time for us to get this completed?’” He expressed a desire to adjust strategies, such as opting for shorter routes to increase the chances of converting on crucial downs.
As the Tigers look to turn their season around, Arnold’s ability to effectively lead the team will be pivotal. The Auburn community is eager to see how the young quarterback responds under pressure, particularly with a challenging SEC matchup on the horizon. Freeze’s defense of Arnold underscores the coach’s commitment to nurturing his quarterback’s development while addressing the pressing issues impacting the team’s performance.
With the season reaching a critical juncture, Auburn fans will be watching closely to see if the offensive adjustments lead to a much-needed victory against Arkansas.
