Urgent Update: Anchorage Schools Welcome Evacuee Students Today

UPDATE: The Anchorage School District is rapidly transitioning to accommodate student evacuees from Western Alaska villages affected by Typhoon Halong. Starting today, evacuee students are entering classrooms, while others are still in the enrollment process, as urgent needs for education and mental health support arise.
In response to the crisis, school officials are providing essential classroom space and mental health resources for these students. Many are arriving from villages like Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, which were hit hard by the storm. A teacher from Kipnuk shared on social media her deep concern for her students, stating, “Some shared their fears about their new schools or teachers. Saying goodbye to our friends and fellow school employees was…I have no words.”
Corey Aist, President of the Anchorage Teachers’ Union, explained the challenges ahead: “Whether classes can stay intact with their current educator from a particular village site will really depend on if the educator is going to stay. It’s going to depend on where all those students end up.” This highlights the urgent need for stability as families adjust to significant changes.
Support from the Lower Kuskokwim School District is crucial during this transition. Superintendent Andrew Anderson noted that school counselors will be on the ground in Anchorage to guide families through the integration process. “The students and families need to have people from our district that are familiar with them and their academic experience to support them in the transition into new schools,” Anderson emphasized.
As the situation develops, the Anchorage School District aims to provide a long-term solution for these families. “We’re about to transition into that longer-term situation of providing a fantastic education to the students impacted by this tragic situation,” said Jharrett Bryantt, a key figure in the district’s response efforts.
Community support is vital as families navigate this difficult time. Anderson reassured evacuees, stating, “Your experiences are very different from what they were just a week or two ago, and we are continuously developing ways to be in close communication and to assist you in whatever needs you have as you move forward.”
As the Anchorage School District takes these immediate steps, families are encouraged to reach out for support and to prepare for an educational environment that prioritizes their unique needs. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated as students who once had stable lives now seek to adapt to new surroundings and educational structures.
For families needing assistance, the Anchorage School District and the Lower Kuskokwim School District are committed to ensuring that every student receives the support necessary to thrive in their new educational settings.
As the situation evolves, stay tuned for more updates on the integration of evacuee students and the ongoing efforts by local authorities to support these communities in need.
