Colorado Buffaloes Embrace New Leadership Ahead of Big 12 Season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball program is undergoing a significant leadership transition as it prepares for its second season back in the Big 12 Conference. During the Big 12 women’s basketball media day on October 21, 2025, head coach JR Payne introduced players Jade Masogayo and Kennedy Sanders as key figures expected to guide the team on and off the court.
The transition of leadership comes after the graduation of several core players, including Frida Formann and Kindyll Wetta, who played pivotal roles in securing three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2022 to 2024. Payne emphasized the importance of developing leadership skills within the program, noting that effective communication and representation are vital for players, both on and off the court.
Building Leadership Skills
Payne highlighted the need for players to step into leadership roles, especially as the team navigates a challenging schedule this season. “We’ve had such great upperclassmen over the years that have really helped mold the younger ones as they’ve come along,” he stated. To facilitate this growth, the team engages in public speaking exercises and team-building activities throughout the summer.
Masogayo, the team’s leading scorer and second-leading rebounder last season, acknowledged the challenges that come with being a vocal leader. “I would definitely say it comes with experience,” she said. “Playing college basketball as long as we have, we have a ton of experience that way. I feel like I can credit my coaches. They’ve really been harping on me to be more of a vocal leader and try to get out of my comfort zone and pave the way for this team.”
Sanders echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of stepping up in their new roles. The ability to communicate effectively and maintain a positive team environment will be essential as they face both victories and defeats throughout the season.
Navigating a New Competitive Landscape
The media day marked the unofficial kickoff for the Buffaloes as they prepare to adapt to the nuances of the Big 12, a league known for its competitive nature. This year, the team has also welcomed former Kansas State guard Zyanna Walker, who brings valuable Big 12 experience to the roster. Payne noted that understanding the logistics of the new venues will be crucial for success this season.
“One of the biggest things we had to adjust to was having the two days in between games,” Payne explained. “We were used to the Friday-Sunday schedule in the Pac-12, which set a pretty good rhythm. But that was really different and that took us a little while to get used to. We have a good understanding now of when we need to start focusing on our opponents, when we can focus more on ourselves and things like that.”
The Buffaloes’ commitment to maintaining a strong program is evident as they embrace the challenges ahead. With new leaders like Masogayo and Sanders at the forefront, the Colorado women’s basketball team is poised to continue its upward trajectory within the Big 12.
