Maimonides Medical Center Launches Brooklyn’s Largest Pediatric ER

Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn has officially opened the largest pediatric emergency department in the borough, a facility designed to cater to over 30,000 children annually. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on October 3, 2023, drew a significant crowd of community leaders and healthcare professionals who emphasized the growing need for specialized pediatric care.

The newly expanded space is four times larger than the previous pediatric emergency facility, reflecting the increasing demand for such services in the area. Dr. Jeffrey R. Avner, chairman of pediatrics at Maimonides Health, highlighted the importance of the center, noting that there are approximately 600,000 children in Brooklyn and only one children’s hospital.

State-of-the-Art Facilities for Young Patients

The new pediatric emergency department features private rooms and advanced imaging technology, enhancing the quality of care provided to young patients. Dr. Eitan Dickman, chair of emergency medicine at Maimonides, stated, “This children’s emergency department is only one of 13 pediatric trauma centers in all of New York State,” underscoring its vital role in the local healthcare landscape.

During the opening, Ken Gibbs, president and CEO of Maimonides Health, shared plans for further expansion. He mentioned that the new facility will allow for a doubling of space for adult emergency services over the next 12 to 18 months. This development aims to alleviate some of the challenges faced by families seeking urgent medical care.

Addressing Family Concerns in Emergencies

The project has been nearly a decade in the making, with city officials acknowledging the stress parents experience when their children require emergency treatment. New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams expressed pride in the initiative, stating, “As we see healthcare being cut, it’s an honor to be in a place that is not only saying we’re going to continue to get healthcare, we’re going to expand.”

State Senator Stephen Chan shared a personal story about his experience at Maimonides when his daughter required emergency care. He recalled the anxiety of that moment and emphasized the importance of having a well-equipped facility close to home.

Community members also voiced their gratitude for the specialized care offered at the new department. Rev. Roxy Birchfield recounted the fear she felt when her daughter, Hunter, fractured a bone during figure skating practice. Birchfield thanked the staff for their understanding and expertise, noting the significant differences in pediatric care compared to adult care.

Hunter herself expressed relief following her experience, stating that the hospital staff made her feel “like everything was gonna be OK, and nothing would hurt.”

Hospital leaders believe that this investment in children’s health will significantly enhance access to critical care and reduce the anxiety families face during emergencies. The expanded pediatric emergency department stands as a testament to Maimonides Medical Center’s commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of Brooklyn’s youngest residents.
