Steelers Explore Future with Aaron Rodgers Beyond 2025 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers are reconsidering their future with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, potentially extending his tenure beyond the 2025 season. Initially anticipated as a one-year commitment, there is growing speculation that the partnership between Rodgers and the team could last longer, given their successful collaboration thus far.
Possibility of a 2026 Return
After signing with the Steelers, Aaron Rodgers suggested that the current season might be his last. However, discussions among team insiders indicate that the organization may keep him in the fold for the 2026 season. ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler noted that, despite the team’s ongoing search for a long-term quarterback solution, the performance of Rodgers has been impressive enough to reconsider their plans.
“In fact, Rodgers’ stint in Pittsburgh has gone so well that the team could rethink its 2026 quarterback plans,” Fowler stated. The Steelers are actively scouting the draft market for potential quarterback prospects but would entertain the idea of having Rodgers return for another season. His ability to throw the football at an elite level remains intact, which could influence the team’s decision.
Rodgers’ Reflections on Retirement
In June, during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers expressed his belief that the 2025 season would mark the end of his career. “I’m pretty sure this is it. That’s why we did the one-year deal,” he stated. He emphasized the significance of finishing his career with the Steelers, a franchise he respects deeply.
“I’ve played 20 freakin’ years. It’s been a long run and I’ve enjoyed it,” he said. “What better place to finish than in one of the cornerstone franchises in the NFL with Mike Tomlin and a great group of leadership?”
Rodgers has brought a considerable boost to the Steelers’ offense, which is currently averaging 25.0 points per game, ranking them among the top teams in the league. Despite a tough loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7, Rodgers has thrown for 1,270 yards, with 14 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
As the Steelers continue to perform well, the possibility of extending Rodgers’ contract may become more appealing. The team currently lacks a long-term plan at quarterback, making the conversation around Rodgers’ future increasingly relevant, especially with the 2026 NFL Draft approaching in Pittsburgh.
Given the ongoing success of the partnership, it appears that the notion of Rodgers being a one-and-done player with the Steelers is becoming less certain. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds as the season progresses.
