UPDATE: The United Way of the Tanana Valley has begun distributing over 1,400 pounds of winter gear to families in need in Fairbanks, Alaska. This urgent effort follows KTVF’s annual coat drive, which concluded on October 12, 2023, and highlights the community’s commitment to supporting those facing hardship.

The drive collected a variety of essential winter items, including hats, gloves, boots, and coats for all ages, from two months to adults. Sarah Hollister, Executive Director of United Way, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community response. “Seeing the community show up with so many coats is just an amazing feeling,” she stated. “In tough times, our community still finds ways to give, showing the spirit of the Golden Heart City.”

Volunteers worked tirelessly to sort and prepare the items at United Way’s headquarters on North Cushman Street. A team of seven sorted the donations in just four hours, ensuring that the gear could quickly reach those who need it most. The first recipients include evacuees from Typhoon Halong, who are in urgent need of warm clothing as they recover from the storm’s aftermath.

“Emerging needs like these are our priority,” Hollister added. “We’re thrilled to support the evacuees with these coats. They are always eager to know when they can pick them up.” This distribution reflects a vital response to the economic challenges many families are currently facing.

The nonprofit has partnered with 15 agencies, including Fairbanks Youth Advocates and Interior AIDS Association, to ensure that all items reach those in need throughout the community. If additional items remain after partner agencies have taken what they require, the remaining gear will be made available to the public.

Hollister encourages residents with extra, freshly laundered coats to drop them off at United Way’s office before Friday. After this date, donations can be directed to local nonprofits like the Fairbanks Resource Agency and the Salvation Army.

As Fairbanks faces the reality of winter, this initiative not only provides warmth but also strengthens community ties in a time of need. The urgency of this effort cannot be overstated as families gear up for the colder months ahead.
