Professor Dilmurat Azimov Recognized as AIAA Associate Fellow
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has honored Professor Dilmurat Azimov from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa with a prestigious designation as an Associate Fellow for the Class of 2026. This recognition highlights Azimov’s extensive contributions to the field of aerospace engineering, particularly in the areas of trajectory optimization, guidance, and control of aerospace vehicles.
The AIAA Associate Fellow distinction is awarded to individuals who have made significant advancements in aeronautics and astronautics through notable engineering or scientific work. Each year, only one in every 150 AIAA members receives this honor, emphasizing the competitive nature of the selection process.
Azimov’s Academic and Research Background
Joining the faculty at UH Mānoa after a distinguished career in academia and research, Azimov currently serves as a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research centers on analytical integration methods, which play a crucial role in optimizing trajectories and enhancing the control systems of flight vehicles. This work is vital for the advancement of next-generation aerospace systems and the development of autonomous vehicles.
“Being named an Associate Fellow of AIAA is a tremendous honor and a significant milestone in my career,” said Azimov. “I’m proud to represent Hawaiʻi, the Aloha State, in the global aerospace community and to contribute to advancing aerospace engineering research and education from our islands.”
Azimov’s academic credentials include a PhD in mechanics from the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, awarded in 1992, and a Doctor of Science degree in dynamics, ballistics, and flight vehicle control from the Moscow Aviation Institute, conferred in 2008.
Induction Ceremony and AIAA’s Role
The formal induction ceremony for the Class of 2026 Associate Fellows will take place on January 14, 2026, during the AIAA SciTech Forum in Orlando, Florida. This event will gather aerospace professionals from around the globe, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas and advancements in aerospace science, engineering, and technology.
With nearly 30,000 members from 91 countries, the AIAA stands as the world’s largest aerospace technical society. Its mission includes fostering collaboration and innovation in the aerospace sector, making Azimov’s recognition an important milestone not only for him but also for the broader aerospace community.
