Skoda Reveals Retro Concept 1000 MBX with Modern Twist

BREAKING: Skoda’s design team has just unveiled a stunning concept that reimagines the iconic 1000 MBX with a modern twist, incorporating the brand’s latest design language, “Modern Solid.” This exciting reveal comes as part of Skoda’s ongoing “Icons Get a Makeover” series, showcasing the creativity of the automaker’s design team.

The original 1000 MBX debuted in 1966 and was one of the rarest models ever produced, with only 1,403 units manufactured before its discontinuation in 1969. A more powerful version, the 1100 MBX, saw even fewer examples, with just 1,114 cars built. Skoda’s latest concept pays homage to this classic, retaining its distinctive boxy coupe shape but adding modern features that reflect today’s automotive innovation.

Designed by Antti Savio and David Stingl, the new 1000 MBX showcases several unique elements, including rear-hinged doors reminiscent of the Mazda RX-8 and a striking glass-covered oval dashboard. The concept is purely digital and will not reach production, serving instead as a creative “what if” exercise that highlights Skoda’s design capabilities.

In an impressive turnaround, the team completed the project in just four weeks, demonstrating the agility and vision of Skoda’s designers. The concept features four sliding doors for easy access to its innovative bench-style front seats and cinema-like rear seating.

While the new 1000 MBX pays tribute to its historical roots, it also draws comparisons to the retro-futuristic Nissan IDx. This compact coupe, comparable in size to the last Audi TT, showcases high-end features not found in any of Skoda’s current models, including a height-adjustable air suspension.

As the auto industry continues to evolve towards electric solutions, Skoda recently announced that the latest concept to embody the “Modern Solid” design language is the upcoming Vision O, a large electric wagon set to debut in a few years. However, for now, the 1000 MBX remains an imaginative side project, captivating car enthusiasts and designers alike.
