A recent trip to Kansas City to attend the Chiefs game against the Raiders turned into a memorable experience, highlighting both community involvement and the spirit of volunteerism. The journey began with essential health precautions, as Ernest and a companion received their vaccinations, including flu and RSV shots, at a local Walgreens. Pharmacy technician Daniella administered the vaccines, while pharmacist De’Marcus provided information on their necessity.
Following their visit to the pharmacy, the pair participated in absentee voting for local amendments, where they encountered fellow community members Charda Bronaugh and Dee Bennett. They were among the first voters of the day, with their numbers being 128 and 129, respectively. Acknowledging the importance of civic engagement, they expressed gratitude to election workers, including Richard Martinez, the elections judge, and staff members Kimberly Thomas, Rhonda Doss, and Betty Dufner.
The health-focused week continued with a visit to LabCorp for routine blood tests. There, Cynthia began the blood draw, but it took a bit of teamwork for Rhonda to successfully locate a vein. Rhonda celebrated 15 years with the company, underscoring the importance of healthcare professionals in our communities. Later, a check-up with Dr. Sean Moran added another layer to their week, where a playful challenge to spell “World” backwards added a touch of humor to the appointment.
The highlight of the week, however, was undoubtedly the Kansas City Chiefs game, attended by Mandy Milam Harris, her family, and Linda Malnar. They were seated in close proximity to the action, with seats just 13 yards from the sideline. The atmosphere was electric as fans cheered loudly for their team amid the “Chiefs battle calls.”
During the game, Shelby, one of the attendees, attempted to catch the attention of star player Travis Kelce with a sign, but he remained focused on the game. Coach Andy Reid made a strategic decision to pull the starters in the fourth quarter, allowing fans to witness the game to its conclusion. Following the event, the group made their way back to Bullard, estimating a return around 00:45, marking a late but exhilarating end to their day.
In conjunction with the enthusiasm surrounding the game, there is an important call for volunteers in the community. The East Texas Food Bank seeks between 50 to 75 volunteers for its Holiday Food Box Distribution on December 1, 2024, at the Angelina County Expo Center, located at 1200 Ellen Trout Drive in Lufkin, Texas.
The event will run from 09:00 to 14:00, with various shifts available for those interested in assisting. Specific roles include traffic controllers, intake personnel, and loading shifts, each requiring different levels of interaction and commitment. Volunteers must be registered in advance to ensure proper organization.
Those eager to contribute to this community initiative can reach out to Susie at (936) 676-6654 or Josh at (936) 240-6378. This opportunity reflects the community’s commitment to serving those in need, embodying the spirit of giving back during the holiday season.
This week not only showcased the excitement of a Chiefs game but also highlighted the importance of community involvement and volunteerism, reminding everyone of the impact they can have through their actions.
