Bob Mulholland, Influential Democratic Strategist, Dies at 78

BREAKING: The political landscape of California mourns the loss of influential Democratic strategist Bob Mulholland, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 78. His tireless dedication to the Democratic Party and community left an indelible mark that will resonate for years to come.

Mulholland’s legacy is underscored by significant contributions, including his work as political director of the California Democratic Party and his unwavering support for his wife, Jane Dolan, during her tenure on the Butte County Board of Supervisors. His impact extended to veterans, political campaigns, and even through his provocative political cartoons, marking him as a true warrior for the Democratic cause.

Karl Ory, former mayor of Chico and longtime collaborator, emphasized Mulholland’s demand for excellence. “He was an exacting taskmaster,” Ory stated, noting his significant role in leading campaigns for crucial propositions like Prop. 65, which mandated labeling for cancer-causing chemicals, and Prop. 99, which taxed cigarettes in 1988. “He was a political powerhouse who fought to close the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant, a historic achievement,” Ory added.

As the Democratic National Convention approaches on Monday, July 15, 2025, Mulholland’s absence is deeply felt among California delegates, including Kamala Harris. His contributions to the Democratic Party will be highlighted as the convention unfolds, reminding attendees of the fierce dedication he exemplified.

Mulholland’s reputation as a political provocateur is well-documented. A 2003 article in Roll Call described him as “one of the great partisan brawlers” of his time. Despite his aggressive tactics, he was also known for his charm and humor, which earned him respect even from political adversaries.

“He was a proud veteran who served our country, cared deeply about California, and never shied away from standing up for what he believed in,” stated James Gallagher, State Assembly Minority Leader.

Local activist Bill Monroe reflected on Mulholland’s duality, saying, “While I often disagreed with his methods, his heart was devoted to promoting the Democratic Party. The Chico Democrats he founded made a significant impact in voter registration.” Monroe poignantly noted, “Rest in peace, Dem Party warrior.”

In a heartfelt statement, Dolan shared that she has received hundreds of messages from friends, colleagues, and even political opponents since Mulholland’s passing. “They all tell me Bob had generosity, kindness, and an infectious smile. He leaves a positive and everlasting legacy on the political world in California and beyond,” she conveyed.

Bob Mulholland’s journey began at Chico State, where he met Dolan, leading to a lifelong partnership in both love and politics. A Vietnam veteran and member of the 101st Airborne, he was decorated with the Purple Heart and recognized for his service, further solidifying his commitment to advocacy for veterans.

Dolan expressed a profound sense of loss, stating, “Chico will never be the same without Bob. He was a force of nature, compassionate and committed to making society a better place for everyone.” As tributes pour in, Mulholland’s legacy as a fighter for the Democratic Party and as a beloved figure in his community will undoubtedly endure.

As the community reflects on his life, the call to honor Mulholland’s memory by continuing his work for social justice and political activism grows stronger. His contributions will be celebrated, ensuring his spirit remains a guiding force in California politics.
