UPDATE: A devastating weekend of gun violence in Chicago has left one person dead and nine others injured, according to the Chicago Police Department (CPD). The shootings occurred across various neighborhoods, with victims aged between 25 and 45.
The violence began on Friday evening, with multiple incidents reported into Saturday morning. The first shooting took place around 6:23 p.m. in the 5500 block of South Lafayette Avenue, where a 43-year-old woman was shot multiple times and is currently in critical condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Just hours later, at 2:23 a.m. Saturday, a 25-year-old woman was shot in the arm while driving on East 57th Street. She was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition.
In another alarming incident occurring shortly after, police found a man in a dark sedan with two gunshot wounds to the chest in the 4400 block of West 16th Street. He is currently in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
As the night progressed, further shootings unfolded, with a 27-year-old man injured in a separate incident at 3:03 a.m. on South Laramie Avenue. He self-transported to the hospital after being shot in the neck.
At 4:05 a.m., a 45-year-old man was shot in the knee on South Cottage Grove but is reported in good condition. However, the most tragic incident occurred at 5:22 a.m., when two victims were shot while in a red Dodge Charger on West Augusta Boulevard. A 37-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while a 29-year-old man remains in critical condition.
By 3 p.m. on Saturday, three men were shot in a parking lot on South St. Louis Avenue. One victim, a 35-year-old, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is in critical condition, while the others are in fair condition.
Authorities continue to investigate these incidents. As of now, no arrests have been made. The situation remains tense as the CPD is urging the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. This surge in violence is a stark reminder of the ongoing concerns surrounding gun violence in urban areas.
