David Platt, Beloved Safety Advocate, Passes Away at 70

URGENT UPDATE: David “Dave” Platt, a cherished member of the community and respected Certified Safety Professional, has passed away at the age of 70 after a short illness on September 30, 2025. His death marks the end of a life dedicated to safety and community service.

Born on June 14, 1955, in Whittier, California, Dave was deeply involved in local activities from a young age, participating in Scouting and Little League. He graduated from Calhi School in 1973 and moved through life with a passion for knowledge, earning a degree in Anthropology from Sonoma State University in 1978.

Dave’s career as a CSP—Certified Safety Professional—saw him educating employers across California on workplace safety, earning him the affectionate nickname “The Safety Guy.” His influence extended through his community efforts, including being a founding member of the Whittier Boys Club.

In 2019, Dave relocated to Sequim, WA, where he spent his final years surrounded by the beauty of the Northwest. His hobbies included photography, cooking, fishing, gardening, and attending concerts, showcasing a life rich in experience and artistic expression.

Dave is survived by his wife, Merribeth Platt, whom he married in 2006, and his daughter, Carolanne Baker. He also leaves behind a loving family, including his sister, mother-in-law, three brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, three nephews, and two step-grandchildren.

His passing is felt widely, with many remembering him for his generous spirit and commitment to safety. As a tribute, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.
