Oklahoma City Thunder’s Nikola Topic Begins Chemotherapy Treatment

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic has commenced chemotherapy following a confirmed diagnosis of testicular cancer. The announcement was made by the team’s general manager, Sam Presti, on October 30, 2023. Presti revealed that Topic had opted to keep this information private until he began treatment, highlighting the player’s ongoing commitment to his training regimen throughout this challenging period.

Topic, who is just 20 years old, was selected as the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Unfortunately, a torn ACL injury had already sidelined him for the entire 2024-25 season. Earlier this month, the Thunder announced that Topic would miss four to six weeks due to a “testicular procedure,” without disclosing further details at that time. Presti clarified that this procedure was essential for determining the presence of cancer, and a subsequent biopsy confirmed the diagnosis.

As of now, Topic has yet to make his NBA debut, and there is no established timeline for his return. Presti shared that Topic’s medical team remains “extremely positive” regarding his long-term outlook. “Our only expectations for him are to focus on this,” said Presti. “This is his most important priority. He’ll be back playing basketball when he’s able to, but we’re not putting any time length or expectations on that, obviously. He has our total support, encouragement, and love.”

The Oklahoma City Thunder organization is ensuring that Topic receives comprehensive care, with a strong team of oncologists at both OU and MD Anderson. Presti emphasized the supportive environment that Topic has within the team, stating, “He is a really remarkable guy. I think everybody knows that, that’s been around him. Extraordinarily mature, composed, resilient. He has all the tools that you could ask for somebody to take on and conquer the situation.”

The challenges faced by Topic are not unique in the world of professional athletics. Former NBA player Nene was diagnosed with testicular cancer during the 2007-08 season and successfully returned to play after missing 76 days. He continued his career for another 11 years, serving as an inspiration to those navigating similar health challenges.

Reflecting on his previous struggles, Topic shared his thoughts about missing his rookie season due to injury. In a video posted by the Thunder in July, he spoke candidly about the emotional toll of not being on the court. “It was hard, you know? I didn’t play a basketball game for a very long time, and that was really hard,” he said. He added that through the recovery process, he discovered a newfound strength within himself. “I feel good now,” he stated, noting his adjustment to the demands of back-to-back games during training.

As Topic focuses on his health, the Thunder community and fans alike are sending their support during this significant time. The organization remains committed to prioritizing Topic’s well-being and recovery, with hopes for his eventual return to the sport he loves.
