URGENT UPDATE: The community is mourning the loss of Samuel Bennett Johnson, II, who passed away at the age of 82 due to complications from Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy. This devastating news was confirmed earlier today, leaving behind a legacy of love and inspiration for his family and friends in Capitola, CA.
Known for his unwavering positivity, Sam’s response to “how are you?” was always a heartfelt “Never better!” His beloved wife, Mary Ann, along with their three children and seven grandchildren, will carry on his spirit. The couple celebrated over 58 years of marriage, creating a family bond that will endure despite this profound loss.
Born on Coronado Island, San Diego, in 1942, Sam was a self-described “beach bum” who cherished the ocean. He spent his youth spearfishing, body surfing, and diving in the waters of La Jolla Shores and Windansea Beach. In 1960, he relocated to Wisconsin to pursue an engineering degree at UW Madison, where he met Mary Ann Schanen. They wed in 1967 and raised their family in Wauwatosa, WI.
Sam’s career flourished when he accepted a position at Sandia National Laboratories in 1981, leading him back to his California roots in Pleasanton. After 23 years of dedicated service, he retired at 62, embracing a new chapter in life. Sam and Mary Ann returned to the beach, purchasing a home above New Brighton Beach where they created cherished memories with their grandchildren.
In retirement, Sam thrived in his passions—beach combing, golfing, and rowing as proud members of the Santa Cruz Rowing Club. His dedication to the club extended beyond participation; he taught others the intricacies of rigging and repairing boats, exemplifying his engineering mindset.
A true tinkerer, Sam spent countless hours in his garage, where he combined his love for fixing things, jazz music, and his favorite beers. His family describes him as a kind and gentle soul whose zest for life was infectious.
The family expresses gratitude to Santa Cruz Hospice for their compassionate care during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, they encourage memorial donations to Hospice in Sam’s memory.
As we reflect on Sam’s incredible journey, it’s clear that his legacy will continue through the lives he touched. His spirit will forever remain a part of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
For those wanting to share their condolences or celebrate Sam’s life, consider reaching out to family or making a donation to honor his memory.
